Disinfection of pool water with salt

The principle of water disinfection is very similar to water disinfection with chlorine, but the dosage differs. The recommended salt rate is 3 to 5 kg per m3 of water in the pool. The salt dissolves in water and chlorine is released into the pool water by electrolysis of the dissolved salt.

Salt pool electrolysis

In order for electrolysis to take place, it is necessary to have the electrodes installed in the filter system. The device that ensures disinfection of water with salt is called solinator. This process involves the cleavage of salt molecules and the formation of chlorine gas, which in turn reacts with water in reaction with water, and as a by-product is sodium hydroxide. Solinator can only work when filtering is started.

The benefits of salt pool disinfection

Disinfection by electrolysis is more conducive to human organism than chlorine disinfection. Disinfection is ecological, but not economic.

Disadvantages of pool salt disinfection

The disadvantage of using salt to disinfect swimming pool water is that salt water is more aggressive for corrosive materials. Chimneys, pumps, pipes and other accessories must therefore be made of corrosion-resistant materials.

Tip:

It is advisable to disinfect the sea salt. Kitchen salt is not recommended due to iodine content. Iodine becomes more aggressive in the electrolytic reaction and dermatological problems may occur. In addition, the kitchen salt contains high amounts of calcium, resulting in higher water hardness and subsequent water pool problems and pool accessories.
